If you visit Indonesia, definitely consider visiting the Komodo National Park! This national park consists of three larger and a number of smaller islands and covers a total of 1,817 km². White beaches, pink beaches, azure blue sea full of colorful sea life and great viewpoints. To discover these beautiful islands, I took a great four day boat trip from Labuan Bajo in Flores with Lombok as final destination. Before getting on the boat, I did an awesome road trip on the island of Flores to never forget. A very big recommendation! This road trip is very good to combine with the boat trip, because the boat trip starts or ends in Labuan Bajo in the west of Flores. You can find a complete Indonesia itinerary of 2 months here. Got excited about this travel video? Then read on! Day 1 Komodo National Park The day started early. When my alarm went off at about 600 am, the light was already shining through the window of my dorm. At 715 am I was at the organization’s office in Labuan Bajo with all my stuff. Because I was traveling at the end of the high season in September 30+ people were divided over three boats. Together with 9 others I was placed on the smallest boat. Quite a bit of luck, because the size of the groups can reach 25 – 40 people. Because we were a small group, everyone had enough space on the deck. Rinca island We passed countless small islands that emerged one by one from the azure blue sea. The first island we set foot on was Rinca Island. Rinca Island is one of the two islands in the Komodo National Park where the famous Komodo dragons live. And it wasn’t long before we spotted the first dragons. How big those animals are! After walking on the island for 10 minutes, we even witnessed the pairing ritual of two those Komodo dragons. We made a short hike on the island until we reached a viewpoint. Fortunately, the hike was short, because it was very hot. Fortunately we were able to recover afterwards on the boat with a big lunch. Pink Beach We took a break from this delicious lunch on Pink Beach. And as the name suggests, this beach is a bit pink. This is due to super small pieces of red coral that have mixed with the white sand. In combination with the azure blue sea, this is a feast for the eyes. But not only the beach is beautiful, also the underwater world is beautiful. While snorkeling I swam among the most colorful fish armed with my action camera. At one point, even a sea turtle came to say hello. Komodo island On Komodo island we would spot the Komodo dragons for the second time. During the short hike we saw some, but not as many as on Rinca island. In addition to the Komodo dragons, there are also various bird and snake species. One of the guides saw a cobra getting away, but unfortunately we were too late to see it. After our visit to Komodo Island we sailed towards Padar Island where the boat was anchored for the night. The first night at sea took some time getting used to the sea. I usually get car and seasick quite quickly and even if the boat is anchored, there is still a lot of movement. Fortunately, there was plenty of fresh air on the deck, which allowed me to sleep reasonably well on my thin mat. Day 2 Komodo National Park Padar island Day two started a bit earlier than day one, because today we climbed to the highest point of Padar island before sunrise. However, we were not alone, but shared the island with hundreds of other tourists. It was about half an hour uphill and after a fairly restless night this was a bit harder than expected. Although I had seen the view from Padar island countless times in photos, it felt very special to experience it in person. From the highest point you have a beautiful view of the three large beaches of Padar island. Did you know that all three beaches have a different color? Unfortunately the island was quite dry and brown because I was there at the end of the dry season. Nevertheless, it was completely worth watching the sunrise here. Long Beach If you think Pink Beach is the pinkest beach in Komodo National Park, then you are wrong. Long Beach is even more pink! Long Beach is part of Padar island. Here too it was beautifully snorkeling and blissful swimming in the crystal clear water. After our visit to Long Beach we set sail for Moyo island which is part of Sumbawa, about 14 to 17 hours of sailing. I relaxed on the deck and enjoyed the passing landscape. After a while sailing we passed Sangeang island where an active volcano is located. Every now and then this giant spits out a big plume of smoke. Very cool to see! At one point we also saw dozens of dolphins swimming in the distance that were getting closer. Until they swam right in front of our boat and played with the waves. Very cool to see! After dinner it was at least 8 hours sailing. That promised to be a tough night. As a precaution I took a motion sickness pill with a beneficial side effect that it made me drowsy. We decided to turn the mats on the deck so that we were the length of the boat and we were, as it were, rocked to sleep by the waves. That worked a lot better than sleeping the other side around, so that your head continuously moves up and down on the swell. Day 3 Sumbawa It was also waking up early this morning, but unplanned. Around 5 o’clock there was “MANTA, WHITE MANTA, WAKE UP!” called from below deck. Most of us didn’t let them say that twice and in no time we were down with our sleepy heads. And it was not just any manta ray, but a white giant manta ray! And no, it was not one, but two. Everyone watched in amazement as these two meter-sized giants “flew” through the water. How magical that was. Do you know that feeling of joy, enthusiasm and additional adrenaline when you see something special? Since Manta Point was closed to large boats a few weeks before our trip, we thought the chance of spotting mantas was very small. That’s why we were even more enthusiastic now. To see and hear the surprise of the crew, this was also the first time they saw a white giant manta ray. And because these animals were unknown to them, they first thought they were dangerous. After some quick online research, these white giant manta rays turned out to be just as harmless as a regular giant manta ray. So we decided to go into the water with our snorkels. Very carefully we lowered ourselves in the water so as not to scare the mantas. However, there is always someone who is not very tactical and who splashes into the water pontifically … As soon as I was in the water, I felt tingling on my skin everywhere, but really everywhere. When I looked under the water, I saw countless little pink things in the water. Oh no, jellyfish! As we all floated silently in the water and tried to ignore the constant painful stinging, the mantas swam straight at us and made a turn at the last minute. Fantastic! After lying in the water for about 10 minutes, I couldn’t take the stinging anymore. They became more painful at the time and it didn’t make me happy when those jellyfish hit my lip, ouch! Moyo island During breakfast on the boat, everyone still spoke enthusiastically about this great experience. One thing was certain, our day couldn’t go wrong anymore. Not much later it was time to visit Moyo Island and climb the waterfall on this island. Thanks to certain minerals in the water, a rough layer remains on the stones, making the waterfall fairly easy to climb. At the top of the waterfall we were able to swim and with the help of a rope to jump into the water. Gili Bedil From Moyo island it was a few hours sailing to Bedil island; a tiny island near the coast of Sumbawa. Only one family lives in this paradise spot. It was an afternoon to relax on the white beach between the palm trees. In the evening we sailed to the uninhabited Kanawa island. Here we ended our last evening with a beach party. Day 4 Sumbawa & Lombok Kanawa island On the last day we got up early as usual after a short night. This time to watch the sunrise on Kanawa island. It wasn’t the crew that woke us up, but we happily dragged the crew out of their cozy beds. The hike on Kanawa island was fortunately not so difficult and we all enjoyed our last sunrise together. After a few hours at most we docked in Lombok. We got in several vans and were driven to the office in Mataram. From there we were taken to our self-chosen final destination. That is how I arrived in Gili Air at the end of the afternoon. Flores ➤ Lombok of Lombok ➤ Flores? I made this four day boat trip in the Komodo National Park with Wanua Adventures. They only offer trips from Flores to Lombok and from Lombok to Flores. Would you like to make a one- or multi-day boat trip starting and ending in Flores, then you have more than enough choice in Labuan Bajo. It doesn’t really matter in which direction your boat trip goes. You see the same things on both routes. In general, the boat trip from Flores to Lombok is a bit more relaxed. This is because you largely sail along with the waves on this route. In addition, you don’t sail very long on the first days, which makes it easier to get used to the swell. After having lived on a boat for so many hours and days, I noticed that I got land sick’ when I was on one of the islands. The first night on Gili Air, I was still swaying in bed. Deck or Cabin Class? Before taking the boat trip, I could choose to sleep in Deck or the slightly more expensive Cabin Class. With Deck Class, you naturally sleep on the deck with other tourists. However, a number of Cabins were also on board; super small rooms with a double bed. These Cabins are located below deck near the engine and it can get very hot. If you don’t mind sleeping in a room with others, I would definitely recommend Deck Class. Do not expect luxury on board. We all slept on a thin mat with a small cushion and a blanket. Perhaps it was better not to know when these were last washed. However, on board there are the necessary things such as a toilet and water tank and a shower with a little luck. What to bring Since this boat trip in Komodo National Park starts at Flores and ends at Lombok, you just take all your luggage on the boat. In any case, make sure you have swimming clothes and enough sunscreen. An action camera can also be fun if you like to capture the beautiful underwater world of Komodo National Park. In addition, my doctor advised to take preventive malaria pills. Because I already had to do this during my tour of Flores, I just took them during the connecting boat trip. Do you sometimes get car or seasick? Then don’t forget to bring travel sickness pills. It certainly doesn’t hurt to stock up on a large amount of snacks, because you can not get them on board. Soft drinks and beer are also recommended to buy in advance. In principle, breakfast, lunch and dinner are sufficient, but after swimming I often felt like eating a snack. For many people traveling in Indonesia, visiting Flores and the Komodo Islands is a top bucket-list item. In my opinion, taking the Komodo boat trip from Lombok over 4 days and 3 nights is one of the best ways to experience this incredible slice of Indonesia. If it's your first time researching Komodo and how to get to Komodo Island, then you might be understandably confused about where to actually go. The gateway to the Komodo Islands is a small harbor city known as Labuan Bajo. If you're taking the 4 Day and 3 Night Komodo boat trip from Lombok, this is where you will finish. If you're looking to experience the best of the Komodo Islands and National Parks, taking a Komodo boat trip from Lombok is going to be one of your best options. Here's a list of reasons why Shorter, 2-Day Boat trips from Labuan Bajo run at almost the same price! You'll save money on flights You'll get to experience other highlights on the way, including Moyo Island The boat stops at all the Komodo Island highlights, including Padar Island and Rinca Island All National Park fees are included! - This is a big one, costs can run over $50 USD for just the entry tickets There is only one main operator that I can actually recommend running boat trips from Lombok to Komodo Island or Flores and you can now book this directly on Viator. This is a small local business organizing the best, safest fleet of boats departing from Lombok. They organized everything for me, including accommodation pickup from my hotel in Senggigi. Alternative Option for How to Get to Komodo Island If you'd rather fly straight to Flores or Komodo, then it's also possible to grab a cheap domestic flight to Labuan Bajo also known as Komodo Airport - LBJ. There are flights connecting daily to Denpasar in Bali. As you might already know, it's also possible to do the reverse trip, from Labuan Bajo to Komodo, which covers the same boat itinerary in reverse. If you plan to do this, then I'd recommend booking a flight to Labuan Bajo. Hiking Rinjani? Read - Mount Rinjani Crater Rim Hike How Much Does the Boat Trip Cost? When I took the Komodo boat trip from Lombok the price was Million Rupiah per person for deck class. There was also the option to pay a little more to get your own cabin for million Rp. However, as with everything in the world lately, it seems the price has gone up a bit. Either way, it looks like it is still excellent value, as the trip is all-inclusive and includes everything for 4 days and 3 nights. I'd recommend just getting the deck class because the cabins can get hot and noisy since they're closer to the engine, which will run all night. What's Included on the Boat? Here's a list of what's included for the boat trip from Lombok to Komodo Island Flores. Accommodation pick up from anywhere in Lombok Deck bedding with a pillow and blanket for 3 nights All meals, typically Indonesian-style food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner Snacks, unlimited coffee, and tea Unlimited fresh drinking water they give you a free reusable drink bottle to minimize plastic waste Lockers for small bags and valuable items Snorkels and masks All relevant National Park Entry Tickets Hiking guides to spot Komodo Dragons on Komodo and Rinca Islands What's Not Included? The 4 days and 3 nights Lombok to Komodo boat trip departs every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. If you're planning the reverse trip from Labuan Bajo to Lombok, then boats leave every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Komodo Boat Trip From Lombok Itinerary Here is the full Komodo boat trip from Lombok itinerary from this tour to help you understand what you might expect on the trip. I'll do my best to give an accurate recap of my entire experience. However, unfortunately, we experienced some engine troubles on the second day, so the trip had to be extended. This wasn't a problem for me personally since we were still able to go on all of the adventures. Regardless, although my itinerary was a little different from the one below, I've written the standard Komodo boat trip from Lombok itinerary to help you understand what to expect. Day 1 - Depart from Lombok - Kenawa Island Depending on where you're staying in Lombok, there will be a minibus organized to pick you up between 700 and 800 am. From here, you will be dropped at the meeting point in Ampenan, which is the old city near the Pier just north of Mataram. Here, you'll be given a quick briefing, settle any unpaid debts, and have the opportunity to organize any beers or wine you might want to bring with you. Lombok Kayangan to Kenawa Island Palau Kenawa After everyone has met at the Ampanan meeting point, another minibus will make the 2-hour journey to the harbor on the East side of Lombok Island. Once we arrived, we were immediately greeted with fresh fruit and loosened the docking ropes for the short journey towards Kenawa Island Palau Kenawa. Kenawa Island Sunset Viewpoint The first anchorage location on the Lombok to Komodo boat trip is Kenawa Island. This is a small island with surrounding white beaches and a small hill from where to watch sunset. We all climbed to the top and watched the first sunset slip away behind the distant Lombok horizon. This was a great time to snap some shots and an opportunity to meet your fellow crewmates. After sunset, we again boarded and set course for Bola Island, where we would lay anchor and sleep for the night. Day 2 - Bola Island to Moyo Island Since it's a little bit of a stretch to get to Moyo Island from Bola Island, the captain turns the engine on before sunrise. This might be a little bit of a rude awakening, especially for those sleeping in cabin class, since they're right next to the engine room. For this reason, choosing the deck class is a much better option. Sunrise at Moyo Island Morning Dolphin Greetings We awoke to the first ocean sunrise by the captain calling out for a pod of dolphins. We sipped coffee, watching the dolphins splash and play in the golden Indonesian seas. Moyo Waterfall After an unlimited portion of banana pancakes, we arrived at Moyo Island. We were surprised to see that the vegetation was completely different from what we'd seen in Lombok prior. The trees were greener and reminded us more of an Australian island landscape. The first item on the Moyo Island agenda was to take a short jungle hike to Moyo Waterfall, also known as Air Terjun Moyo. While the main waterfall wasn't flowing at maximum potential due to the season, it wasn't completely dried up and still had a decent trickle. Moyo Waterfall Tree Jump During the dry season, the main attraction at Moyo Waterfall is actually not the waterfall itself. The team guided us up the waterfall and into a small jungle clearing with a narrow but deep freshwater pool. From here we took turns jumping from the highest trees directly above the waterhole. Snorkeling at Moyo Island After the morning waterfall trek, it was time to get our masks and fins on for the first snorkeling opportunity of the Lombok to Komodo boat trip. The waters surrounding Moyo Island are pristine with healthy coral reef and schools of fish. Following the snorkeling trip, we ate a plentiful lunch and bunkered in for the long stretch from Moyo to Komodo National Park. Long Stretch to Komodo - 18 Hours Sailing Since you'll be covering a large stretch of water from Moyo Island to Komodo National Park, the next 18 hours will be spent on board the boat. While there isn't much to do during this time, it's an essential part of the journey to Komodo from Lombok. As I mentioned earlier, we experienced some engine troubles at the start of this section and were forced to anchor at a nearby island known as Satonda Island as we waited for a replacement boat. For us, this wasn't a big deal. We spent the rest of the afternoon jumping from the boat into the crystal clear waters and swapped boats later in the evening. We were told that this long stretch of ocean is susceptible to rough seas and strong wind. However, we had flat seas the entire trip in October. If you're a little seasick, the crew stock seasick tablets to help with symptoms. Anchored at Satonda Island Day 3 - Komodo Island, Pink Beach, and Long Beach Pantai Namo Finally, after a long stretch at sea, you'll finally arrive in Komodo National Park. The first item on the agenda is to visit the famous Komodo Islands to see the Komodo Dragons. Komodo Dragons Included in the trip price is a guided hike around Komodo Island to spot some wild Komodo Dragons. Our guide was super informative and spotted a couple of small dragons on the trail. After the hike, we were taken to the restaurant where we spotted some absolute monsters! Do the Komodo Restaurants Feed the Komodo Dragons? Like me, you might initially assume that the restaurant on Komodo Island feeds the dragons to keep them coming back. However, I sought out some local knowledge of the matter to see if it was true. It's true that the Komodo dragons were being fed up until 2009. However, this was stopped with the introduction of a new conservation law. The introduction of this law is strictly enforced by the national parks, who are responsible for protecting the dragons. It's important to remember that Komodo dragons are large reptiles, and therefore need to minimize movement throughout the day to conserve energy. They are drawn to the restaurant by the smell of food. However, dragons only actually eat once a month, therefore you'll just find them lazing around rather than hunting most of the time. The Komodo dragons need to rely on their natural hunting behaviors in order to get food on Komodo Island. Pink Beach Komodo Island Pink Beach is one of the most famous beaches on Komodo Island. It's known for its naturally pink sand, incredible snorkeling, and turquoise water. My tip for Pink Beach is to snorkel out roughly 150 meters from the shore. Here, you'll find a steep reef wall with incredible coral and marine life. Long Beach Komodo Island The last activity on Day 3 of the Komodo boat trip from Lombok is a stop at Long Beach. This is also known as Pantai Namo, and as its name suggests, it's a long stretch of beach on Komodo Island. What you might not know is that this beach is also technically another "Pink Beach". In fact, our opinion was that this beach was actually "pinker" than Pink Beach. Regardless, this stop is another great opportunity to do some snorkeling. We spotted several turtles and even a reef shark! After all that snorkeling, the boat anchors outside of Padar Island in preparation for the epic sunrise trek in the morning. Day 4 - Padar Sunrise Hike, Rinca Island, Kelor Island, and Labuan Bajo Day 4 of the Komodo Island boat trip from Lombok is arguably the most epic. Padar Island Sunrise Hike You'll be woken up early by the crew to begin the short but epic sunrise hike to the top of Padar Island viewpoint. If you google "Komodo" this is the photo that you'll probably see first. It's the iconic line of jagged mountains on mountains edged by sandy beaches of every color. The hike doesn't take more than 20 minutes and there is a newly constructed pathway that makes it an easy walk. The views from the top of Padar Island were one of the most incredible sights I'd ever seen, which makes up for how crowded it can get. Rinca Island Since you're in Komodo National Park, you get double the chance to see wild Komodo dragons. This time, the boat stops at Rinca Island, which is much smaller than Komodo. Again, you'll have a hiking guide included in the initial price, who will guide you to see the dragon nesting sites and resting Komodos. Kelor Island The final stop of the epic boat trip from Lombok to Komodo Island is Kelor Island for sunset. Unfortunately, due to the engine complications, we cruised past this island and didn't have time to stop. However, we still saw some of the famous bats who make the nightly flight from the island and block out the setting sun with their sheer numbers. Labuan Bajo, Flores And just like that, the trip comes to an end at the main port of Labuan Bajo, the harbor capital of West Manggarai Regency of the island of Flores. We said our goodbyes and after checking into our hostel, met up at the Paradise Bar. This is a popular Reggae Bar overlooking the harbor. More Epic Experiences From Lombok Island Below is a list of the most popular and worthwhile experiences that you can book on the island. If you read my other travel guides and blogs, you'll know that I don't usually choose guided, multi-day trips. However, I'm personally stoked that I decided to hop on the this boat trip. In terms of this Komodo trip review, I'd give it a 5/5 simply for the value. Once I arrived in Labuan Bajo, I tried to compare boat trips and island hopping trips and found that 2-day trips cost just as much, with fewer stops. Although we experienced some boat issues, I was astounded by how quickly a local company organized a replacement boat.
